BADGERS

A badger family or clan can have up to 12 members.

Males are called boars and females are called sows - yes, just like pigs - but the babies are not called piglets, they are called cubs.

Females can breed before they are a year old. They can mate at any time of the year, but will not implant the fertilised eggs until they can time the birth to a plentiful food time - clever!

For a badger to die of old age it is usually about 14 years old.

The average badger weighs about the same as a corgi - the dog not the car!

Badgers have five toes on each foot, rather than four and dew claw.

They eat worms, insects, voles, mice, fruit, roots, small reptiles and amphibians, and are rather partial to peanuts and fat balls.

Their eyesight is not as good as their sense of smell.

If you shine a torch at the sky and bring it down slowly onto a badger it will think it is the moon and not run away.

It is illegal to interfere with a badger sett or to harm the badgers in any way.
