Grey Heron

The Grey Heron is nearly 1 metre tall, with a wingspan of 1.5 to 2 metres.

The juveniles are just grey, whilst the adults also have a white head with a black stripe behind the eye.

They will eat fish, frogs, small mammals, reptiles and baby birds.

They fly with their necks bent.

Herons nest in trees in a group known as a heronry.

They sunbathe by standing bolt upright, tummies to the sun and wings half folded - looking like a flasher!

Someone once photographed a grey heron in Holland, catching and drowning a baby rabbit for his tea.

They stand so still that they can easily be missed.
